Global Climate Change
Scientists are convinced that global climate change is being driven by our use of fossil fuels and that unless substantial measures are taken the consequences will be serious and possibly catastrophic. See a recent editorial in Science. Concern over rising sea levels has been heightened by recent reports that the Greenland and Western Antarctic Ice Sheets are melting much more quickly than previously thought. Preliminary data indicate that the melting artic might cause failure of the Gulf Stream, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Another consequence of global climate change is an expected acceleration in the already record rate of loss of biodiversity. Because coal contains a high proportion of carbon, its use generates a disproportionately large amount of CO2 and is probably the most potent driver of global climate change.
