Campaigns for Sustainable Energy

Bioscience Graduate Programs:

Biological Chemistry, MD/PhD, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience

We aim to make the Programs climate neutral by balancing CO2 emissions associated with program activities with donations to the windpower program. Precise measures of emissions are beyond our ability to estimate at this time. We therefore make the pragmatic ballpark estimate of 2X electricity usage (electricity + natural gas and other sources) + associated air travel. Electricity usage is taken as the U of U per capita value of $30/yr X 4.5 FTE working in the program offices. This number is doubled to approximately account for natural gas and other sources. Associated air travel estimates are $5 (US domestic flight average) X 110, the number of prospective students interviewed each year. The 100% mark will be reached for the year when (on average) all faculty members of the programs donate $3/yr or when all the current students that entered the U through the programs donate $3/yr. All members and supporters of the programs are invited to contribute to this effort. This is also a great mechanism to make your share of household electricity come from a wind source ($30/yr, US average) or to offset other sources of CO2 emissions. There is no penalty for exceeding our 100% target!
